Tamil Raasi Calculator
Your Tamil zodiac sign is determined by the Moon's position at the exact moment you were born. Enter your birth details below and we'll calculate your Raasi for you.
Unlike Western star signs which only need your birthday, Tamil Raasi requires your birth time and location because the Moon moves through a new sign roughly every two and a half days.

How Does This Tamil Raasi Calculator Work?
Western zodiac signs are straightforward. Your birthday falls within a fixed date range, and that determines your sign. Tamil Raasi doesn't work that way. Your Raasi is based on the Moon's position in the sidereal zodiac at the precise moment you were born, which means two people born on the same day can have entirely different signs depending on what time they arrived.
This calculator takes your birth date, time, and timezone, converts everything to a universal time reference, and then calculates the Moon's ecliptic longitude using established astronomical formulas. It then applies the Lahiri ayanamsa (the standard correction used in Tamil and Vedic astrology) to convert from the tropical zodiac to the sidereal zodiac. The resulting position tells us which of the 12 Raasi signs the Moon occupied when you were born.
Why Birth Time Matters So Much
The Moon moves through a complete zodiac cycle in about 27.3 days, which means it spends roughly 2 days and 6 hours in each sign. During a single calendar day, the Moon might transition from one sign to the next. If you were born in the morning, your Raasi could be different from someone born that evening.
This is why Tamil families traditionally record exact birth times, often down to the hour and minute. If you don't know your exact birth time, try asking your parents or checking your birth certificate. Many hospitals record it. If you genuinely can't find it, enter noon as an estimate, but keep in mind the result is less certain.
What is the Lahiri Ayanamsa?
If you've ever wondered why your Tamil Raasi is different from your Western star sign, the ayanamsa is the reason. The Earth's axis wobbles slowly over thousands of years (a phenomenon called precession), which means the constellations have shifted relative to the calendar since Western astrology was codified. Tamil and Vedic astrology accounts for this shift; Western astrology doesn't. The Lahiri ayanamsa is the most widely used correction in South Indian astrology, named after the Indian astronomer N.C. Lahiri who standardised the calculation in the 1950s.
Already Know Your Raasi?
If a family member has already told you your Raasi, or you found it in your Jaadhagam (birth chart), you don't need this calculator at all. Head to our Tamil Raasi Signs guide to explore what your sign reveals about your personality, naming traditions, compatibility, and cultural roots.
